NAPA VALLEY HARVEST REPORT
An early bud burst followed by warm weather and spring rains brought a rapid start to this year’s growing season. Following in the footsteps of the 2015, the warm weather conditions followed through until June and the first few weeks of July.
Surprisingly, high temperature peaks mid-July then tapered off throughout August resulting in more moderate climactic conditions, the cooler than average day time temperatures coupled with cooler nights provided a longer hanging time for the grapes. A perfect combination for the intensely coloured, complex wines we have come to expect from Napa . The grapes ripened uniformly and, while yields may be slightly lower than the long term average, the berries were full of flavour with good acidity and the tannins were ripe, soft and fleshy.
Generally fermentation was conducted in a classic manner, and the wines finished cleanly, deep in colour and bold in structure. At this early stage the wines show great promise with an abundance of ripe fruit beautifully balanced and a rich tannic profile.
All in all, the 2016 vintage has delivered high quality – great news all round!
